Bring Back the Manners!!

Manners... That word sounds so old fashioned, yet why should manners ever go out of style. I realize that I work with teenagers--this is not exactly known as the most polite age group. Maybe I expect too much. For example:
Please should follow a request.
Thank you--say it!
Make eye contact when talking to someone.
Hold doors!
When making a request, phrase it as a question, not a statement. (Don't tell me you need to go to the bathroom, ask if you may go to the restroom.)
When borrowing from someone, take care of the borrowed items.
I don't need to know exactly what bodily function you are performing in the bathroom.
Girls, sit with your legs together!
It is possible to burp politely--close and cover your mouth.
For heaven's sake, please don't make out for 5 minutes 2 feet from my classroom door!

I could go on, but you get the point. For some reason, adults in my generation seem to have the attitude that they don't want to be so uptight about manners. Next thing you know, I have boys pushing me out of the way to go through the door first, and girls yelling across the classroom they need a tampon. Yikes. I'm thinking uptight is a good thing!

Eventually we will get disgusted with our animal-like behavior and realize that manners aren't such a bad thing.

  1. Absolutely right on this one. Kids today lack manners and common sense By the way when my son gets to high school, feel free to hit him upside the head with a book to stop what ever bad behavior he has.

  3. I've been trying to teach my boys manners. They're 2 and 4 and they have "please" and "thank you" drilled into them (though the 2 year old is still trying to figure it out). I don't have to worry about some of the other things that the HS kids seem to do now, but they will learn how to be polite. At least, thats my plan.

I look forward to reading your blog more.

  4. Yeah, I think "caring" is dying as well. No one gives a crap about anyone or anything...I'm terrified of the future, it only goes downhill from here....

  5. You couldn't have said it better - I sometimes feel we're trying to raise our kids in a society that believes manners belong in the dark ages!!! As my kids know, in our home manners are here to stay!!!
